WEARS | LEOPARD PRINT

The number five entry on the Urban Dictionary for the definition of a tart is: a woman who wears too much make-up, stiletto heels, very short skirts and tight revealing tops, often in faux animal print. For some reason, unbeknownst to me, sometime in the 80s leopards became associated with loose morals and therefore by affiliation so did the women that wore leopard print ––perhaps a little unfairly. Thankfully it’s had something of a revival in recent years and seems to have lost it’s tag so if you don’t already now’s the time to get some leopard print in your wardrobe.

TV | FRESH MEAT
Anyone who has been to university will identify with some of the characters and situations that arise in Channel 4’s new comedy drama Fresh Meat –– the third year student who was left behind by his peers because he’s a little weird, the couple with the instant attraction who can’t quite get it together, and the goody two-shoes who tries too hard to be liked. The show follows six students who have been thrust together in shared accommodation after missing out on university halls. It’s early days but unlike other new comedies there’s no settling in period there was laughs from the first episode –– but then what else did you expect from the creators of Peep Show.

WATCH | RELIGULOUS
Religion. Let’s fuck it like Propagandhi. I’m no great fan of the cult of religion and will take my chances with science long proven to be correct in fact over fiction and fable. RELIGULOUS is a great little documentary from one of my all time comedy heroes Bill Maher on a journey of enlightenment across the far corners of the globe disproving and discrediting the rot of organized religion along the way. Released in 2008 and directed by Larry Charles the film treads familiar ground stylistically with the great Michael Moore with heavy editing and beautifully collated archive and composite footage. For fans of Maher this is familiar ground having built a stand up career out of ripping into those more holy than thou.

WATCH | BLACKADDER

There was a nasty rumour going around last week that there might be a fifth series of Blackadder. The man himself, Rowan Atkinson, claimed there have been discussions about the prospect of another series of the historical comedy. Don’t get me wrong I am a huge fan of the show (apart from the first series, which is best forgotten in my opinion), but I think some things are better off left well alone. The series ended on a high with Blackadder Goes Forth in 1989 - which provided the perfect role for Stephen Fry as the wonderfully insane Captain Melchett. My concern is that any new series would only be a lame attempt at a comeback, ruining mine and so many people’s memory of the show. The only way it could work is if all the old team get together. But I’m more than happy to eat my own words if in a year’s time I’m laughing at Baldrick’s latest cunning plan.

WEARS | CLAE HOCKNEY

So it’s off to the bin with my good old trusted Weejuns and hello to my brand new (on sale) CLAE HOCKNEY's in caramel. Delicious they are. Not as hardly or of the pedigree of the classic BASS granted, but way more versatile and dare i say it sexy in contrast. Looks reasonably well made too. The UK weather may prove different but at a snip over 40 quid all in there’s no arguing with the price or the stying on these.

Clae Hockney 2

Equally adaptable to smart as to casual, street to studio CLAE have excelled themselves in the styling and finishing on this model and the ELLINGTON, proper neat. Next seasons Hockney’s have just dropped at SS20 in Oxblood. On recommendation pick yourself up a pair and tear it up before they get gone.

BRAND | ALICE TAKES A TRIP

Despite its girly appearance (which would usually have me clicking the back button) I can’t help but keep returning to Alice Takes a Trip. This independent fashion label was set up in 2006 by two sisters who take “pride in the fact that everything is handmade or hand finished” in their studio in Sheffield. I’m guessing they are animal lovers as cats, horses and dogs tend to feature heavily in their collection. I had had my eye on a natty little jumper featuring a lion’s head and a faux suede bow. Disappointingly, on my latest visit to the site, it’s no longer available but that’s what happens when you don’t snap up items from small labels when you first see them. However, it won’t be hard to find an alternative. The latest additions to their collection have a Victorian feel, all dark velvet and lace collars. It’s not to my usual taste but I like it.

LABEL | US VERSUS THEM

God i love those Americans and their never ending production line of hot property brands. Aside from a few key UK heads like Addict and King we have produced very little world beaters. There are a few in the shadows to compete but nothing like American industry. US VERSUS THEM is simply one of the coolest and edgiest up and coming US label i have come across so far. Loving the minimalism and restrained colourways and typefaces. This stuff definitely sounds out.
